you can keep ‘em for the birds and bees. gimme money.
Aiden really loved his job. What wasn’t to love? He got to be with people, hang out in the great outdoors, paid vacations and benefits… he just loved it, even if the people there may not have loved him. Clumsy people were one thing. People can tolerate the clumsy ones. Besides, it gave everyone something to laugh about. A guy trips over a pebble, and everyone yucks it up. People will talk about that other person tripping over a pebble for weeks, maybe months even, as it was their only form of entertainment. The guy who tripped over the pebble now hides his face in shame, because everyone laughed in his expense. Aiden wasn’t really clumsy exactly. He was in, no way, the guy that tripped over the pebble. He was more… accident prone. Aiden could easily avoid confrontation with the ground or anything trying to get him there. He wasn’t clumsy at all, really, he just had bad accidents. Very, very bad accidents. His experiments and inventions always backfired in some way. Whether it be blowing up in someone’s face, or hitting someone on the head, it happened. Granted, things could be worse. He hadn’t chopped off anyone’s limb yet.
He whistled a happy tune as he walked onto work. Having a car was overrated. While he wanted a car, it wasn’t like he could afford one. Not on his salary, and asking his parents for help was out of the question. He was a grown man now, after all, and determined to make it on his own. Even if he wasn’t doing well. His apartment wasn’t so bad. A little small, but just about perfect for him. It wasn’t like he had many necessities. A kitchen, a bedroom, and a small area where he could work on his inventions was good enough for him. He had a TV sitting in the corner of the “living room,” but he didn’t use it much. He was usually too busy working on something. A laptop computer sat on the corner of his desk; he used that more than anything. While he didn’t like resorting to modern technology for everything, he had to admit, his laptop was great, and allowed him to sketch out inventions and form ideas that he couldn’t do by hand. As talented as he was, he couldn’t do much artsy stuff by hand. He was much better at constructing and building.
His tune carried as he walked along Main Street, with his hands in his pockets. It was almost time for work to begin, and the first bell had already rung by then. But Aiden wasn‘t paying much attention to the time. His blue eyes were caught up in the glitz and glamour of the metal products in the window of the electronics store. Aiden wasn‘t really one to spend money he didn‘t really have-- in fact, he wasn’t at all frivolous when it came to spending money. He saved it constantly. But still, the electronic store was on his way to work. Like it was set there to be a detour, meant for only him. He couldn’t avoid stopping. The inventor would never buy those pointless things-- really, what was the point of an electric toothbrush that you could play Tetris on? While it was cool, it served no point.
Aiden didn’t even realize what time it was-- almost nine thirty AM, and he was already late for work. But his hands were cupped around a little ball, a clock radio type thing, and the display flickered with different things like certain celebrity’s birthdays and whatnot. Another pointless toy, but Aiden didn’t plan on buying it. He was just… interested in what was inside. His mind was only focused on what could be. Could he take this thing apart and build something new? Most likely, and that was what fascinated him.
Aiden’s focus didn’t shift at all in the next ten minutes-- the ball was occupying his concentration, along with other things in the store. He bounced it up and down in his pale hand, wandering around and smiling at all the expensive gizmos. The store owner probably thought he was psycho, but Aiden didn’t particularly notice. “Wow!” He put the ball down, examining one of the items on the shelves thoroughly. “I wonder what this one does…” He wasn’t speaking to the store owner or anyone in particular, just to himself as he poked the machine with a finger. Twenty minutes had passed. If he didn’t realize what was happening yet, he certainly would when he glanced at the time.
