More often than not, Kole worked the night shift. Being on the day shift, as far as he was concerned, was kind of pointless in a town like Walten. Towns like these were where the stereotype of the dumb cop perpetually munching on donuts were formed. They sat in their squad cars all day, chatting over the squawk of the radio and doling out traffic tickets like it was their raison d'etre. If there was any action at all in this town, it happened at night. More than that, the guys on the night patrols didn't get under Kole's skin as much. A lot of them had greater force aspirations than a badge and a gun to show off. They had to, they'd volunteered to work the night shift. Another appealing trait of night shift officers was their general lack of chattiness. They didn't feel the need to go around shooting the breeze and breaking any and all silences. He could go an entire night with his partner not speaking more than a few sentences to one another. And since Kole wasn't exactly the most social of beings, this was a plus in his mind.
The other think Kole liked about the night shift was the schedule it necessitated for the rest of his day. When he got off duty around eight in the morning, he spent the majority of his morning catching up on paper work back in the office, thus avoiding chipper morning people and annoying morning traffic. He didn't leave until the majority of the Walten population was in work or school, leaving the town relatively quiet. That was when he ran any errands or ventured into the parts of town that weren't his favorite. Like the market place. Usually crowded with suffocatingly large number of people, it was more or less a ghost town around one in the afternoon. Perfect for someone who would rather get shot with his own gun than spend more than ten minutes in a crowd. He didn't even like being in elevators if there were more than two other people inside.
This morning, however, when he'd gotten off duty there wasn't much to write up. Nothing had really happened over the night, except one of the other cops arresting his brother but that didn't really have anything to do with Kole. The rest of the precinct was having a field day with the gossip but Kole didn't particularly give a shit. He understood the sentiment though, there were times he'd briefly entertained the idea when dealing with his own brother. He didn't think he could actually ever go through with it, though. This marked lack of paper work saw Kole out on the streets much earlier than he usually was. He'd planned on stopping by the grocery store on his way home - he was running dangerously low thanks to his particular dislike of grocery shopping - but he'd be damned if he stepped into the store now. Soccer moms a plenty would be roaming the aisles and he just wasn't in the mood. Instead he decided to do the next best thing to scrapping the mission and going home. He parked his bike in front of Scat Cat's music store. He came here every once in a while to try out the new models of six strings hanging on the walls or just to walk up and down the aisles adding to his eclectic cd collection.
Giving a nod to the owner as he made his way inside, Kole walked around the store, his eyes cast to the walls to see what might be new hanging there. Seeing nothing new that caught his eye he pulled an old favorite off the wall and set up in a back corner of the store, plugging into an amp there and strumming away.

--*I'm not the one who's so far away*-- WHEN I FEEL THE SNAKE BITE ENTER MY VEINS (*Never did I wanna be here again*) It had been another day and another fight with her father. It seemed like things had gotten worst after she had moved into her own little apartment. Ariel should have just went into work today instead of taking the day off, but her father had wanted to see his girls and it was the only time all seven girls could be in the same place at once. It was a disaster waiting to happen, but she hadn't seen some of them in so long that she couldn't turn down the opportunity. So, she had went and at first everything was fine. There were a few arguments, but nothing that would ruin the day. That was until one of her sisters had mentioned how college was going. The second her father had turned to look at her she knew exactly what he was thinking. Even before Ariel could open her mouth he had started on when she was going. She had tried to not let it turn into an argument, but that had never been something she was good at. What started as her simple refusal had turned into a full blown screaming match and she had stormed out of there. At least there had been a couple of hours where she got to enjoy spending time with her family.
Her temper had settled down, but not enough to go back. Maybe tonight she would stop by and at least have a chat with her mother. Even though the other woman had been dead for over fifteen years she still liked to stand in the waves and tell her about her life. It brought a sense of peace about her that few things could. Her job was one of those other things. Maybe not her job, but all of the items that came into the shop. She loved learning about the history behind everything and it never took long before she was so caught up in the interest of whatever new object she was learning about that she forgot about whatever had been bothering her. Unfortunately going into work now was not an option as her boss had decided that she should take a day off and had closed the shop. They were expecting a big shipment tomorrow and it would keep the two of them busy for the next couple of weeks. The older woman had decided this could be a well deserved rest before all of the work.
Without the beach or the shop as an option to cool off, she had head to Scat Cat. The music would be able to soothe her. It reminded her of her mother and she loved to sing. Walking into the shop she headed around the store simply humming. There was nothing that she was looking for in particular. her music collection was as eclectic as everything else in her life. Hearing someone playing her curiosity got the better of her and she made her way back there. Ariel started singing for a few seconds, before she realized what she was doing and looked down blushing. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to disturb you. I heard you playing and started singing, it was an automatic response. Ummm, you're very good by the way." Normally she wouldn't have started a conversation, but once she did, she didn't know how to stop. Ariel stood there wringing her hands waiting for the other guy to speak. She was not a rambler by any means and she knew that as soon as she got her head back under control she would stop.

Music had never really been a big part of Kole's life growing up. And by not a big part, I mean non existent. According to Kole's mother, he had more important things to be focusing on than frivolous artsy things. Sure he heard stuff at school and with the few friends he had, but it was never a main point in his life like it was for other people. It wasn't until he moved out on his own that he really started to indulge his like of music. He wasn't a prodigy or anything and it still didn't become a major part of his life but it was a good way to unwind or pass the time when he needed to. That's how he had learned to play guitar. He couldn't really afford his own guitar or the upkeep that came with it but on days that he had nothing to do when he got off duty, he would come to the music store, make use of the supplies there, and teach himself to play. He hadn't been any good at all for a long while and the owner of the store - one of Kole's few friends in this town - had made fun of him mercilessly for it. The guy was lucky, Kole didn't take being teased well most of the time. Even his own brother couldn't get away with it. But Kole liked the guy and it was the least he could put up with for being able to use the guitars and amps free of charge.
That was five years ago and he was still coming into this place on a fairly regular basis. And there was a lot less to make fun of where his playing was concerned. If you asked him, it wasn't something he would boast about - which is odd since boasting happened to be one of his favorite hobbies - but it's nothing he's hiding in shame either. Especially when he got to work with his favorite guitar. His baby. The one material possession - beside his gun - that he would most like to keep forever. The Gibson Jeff Beck Blow by Blow Les Paul. It was a Les Paul guitar but one step further. It was the exact model played by Jeff Beck, one of the most iconic rock guitarists of all time. Never pegged Kole to know facts like that? Well then you obviously don't know Kole. This guitar was played by the best and Kole values things that are the best. The day this guitar was sold would be a sad day for the cop. He wouldn't part with it well. It he could buy one random item and cost was no object, this would be it.
That was the guitar he was playing today as he killed time to avoid the masses of the market place in the morning. The amp wasn't turned up loud, he didn't really want to draw a lot of attention to himself. But it could at least be heard a few aisles away. While he was playing, he let his single mindedness take over. Kole was the kind of guy who, once he was intent on a task, was hard to distract. Which is probably why he didn't hear the singing right away. He was so focused on playing - and playing right - that it wasn't until the singer had stopped singing that he'd noticed the added sound at all. The addition of her voice to the strumming of the guitar had been a good one, which was why he hadn't noticed. It just seemed to fit. "You didn't" he said, his words clipped as he spoke. To others it might seem awkward or rude but that was just Kole. Not exactly the most socially adept person in the world. He nodded his thanks as the silence dragged on, perhaps a little uncomfortably. "You're pretty good too," he said finally to break the silence. The compliment sounded odd coming from him and he felt it. "I mean, it just - fit well. Your voice. And the guitar."

--*I'm not the one who's so far away*-- WHEN I FEEL THE SNAKE BITE ENTER MY VEINS (*Never did I wanna be here again*) Ariel was more of a singer than anything else. She could play a few instruments, mostly the piano and she wasn't half bad when it came to the flute, but singing was her passion. Instruments were for fun, when she as gathered around with her family or friends and they decided to just have some fun and an impromptu concert. Singing she had been trained in, the lessons she had taken as a child had come from a close family friend so none of them were ever formal, but they had taught her to control her voice. Reading music was what came hard to hear, she could hit any pitch by hearing it, but when she was handed a sheet of music and told to sing with that it became a tad more difficult. Maybe it was why she liked singing so much better, if she could hear the music than she could change the pitch to fit it. The added bonus was that she could be anywhere and start to sing, whether it be quietly and under her breath or out loud where everybody could hear her it didn't matter. The only time she really cared was when she was disturbing someone else from what they were doing. The nice thing was that she had a pretty enough voice that most people weren't bothered by it at all. Hopefully the man who she had joined in the music session would be one of those and not the people who got onto her about being considerate to others.
Her singing had already taken a lot of the edge off and she could feel herself cooling off. If it hadn't been for the guy across from her she was sure she would be completely relaxed too, but right now she was a little nervous about how he was going to react. The tone was lost on her. It was like sarcasm, she took people for what they said. Which got annoying at times, especially when someone thought she was being a brat back to them and it ended up in a weird sort of fight. "I'm glad than." The silence was getting to her and she wrapped a red curl around her finger and shuffled from foot to foot. "Thank you. I guess it's a good thing to be good at something that you love doing." He was being nice to her and she took that as a good sign, maybe it wasn't the most comfortable conversation, but he had yet to tell her to go away or that she wasn't wanted. She took the compliment as a sign to keep the conversation going instead of just letting it drop away. Of course she knew nothing about him, but at least she could talk about music. It was a start somewhere.
Realizing that she had no idea of what his name was and referring to him as guitar guy would get old before she even said it she stuck out her hand and offered him a bright smile. "I'm Ariel." She loved to meet new people. Even after spending twenty-one years in the same town, she learned quickly that there was a lot of people she didn't know. Her father had kept her pretty sheltered in the house when they were young and she had stuck mostly with her close group of friends. "I enjoyed singing to your playing. We should do it again sometime." She really had too. It wasn't often that the redhead got to sing with other people and there was always something new to discover when performing with new people. "Have you been playing long?"
