Thomas Abraham O'Malley
* tell us a little about yourself.
Well, hey there! The name’s O’Malley-- Thomas Abraham, that is. I ain’t real fond of my name, I’ll tell ya that much. Doesn’t it sound like it belongs to some old politician? And I am far from that. Anywho, call me Tom. Abe is a no-no.
Born thirty-one years ago on July 17th. My pop was a jazz musician-- which called for a lot of moving. But my entire family was native to Walten. Somehow, we always ended up moseyin’ back here, even when it wasn’t called for. I guess the same has happened to me- I get bored, restless, all that jazz, but somehow, I always end up back home. … Even though that doesn’t last long. Like I said, I get restless. I don’t need no personal baggage or nothin’ like that. I just pick up, and go. It’s easier.
I don’t have a steady job or anythin’ like that. Now, don’t let that brand me as a bum. I’m nothing’ of the sort. I have a band-- a jazz band. I’m a singer there. I never learned a talent like playin’ trumpet, like my best friend in the group, so they just got me for the second best thing, ya know? We play when we can and stuff, when I’m not on the move. Sometimes, they come along with me and we all chill out. It’s a good time-- and I think that’s most known for: a good time.
I’ve been told I look like that one guy on that dancing show. I don’t pay much attention to that crap-- it rots your brain. But apparently, his name’s Damian Lewis. I ain’t ever heard of him, but if he looks anything like me, I gotta say, he must be a handsome fella.
* what are some of your positive traits?
Well, I gotta say, I’m a pretty quick thinker. I’m light on my feet and I’ve always got a plan. Even if it’s made at the spur of the moment and kinda sloppy, I got one churning in my brain. I’m street smart, and I know what it takes to make it out there in that big, wondrous place called ‘the world.’ Being a smooth talker can getcha places-- hey, don’t resent me ‘cuz I got the gift of gab!
I’m a pretty laid back and relaxed kinda guy. It takes a lot to tick me off, but pushing my buttons can get you into a headlock fast and quick. Still, it takes a lot to get me to that point, you don’t got nothing’ to worry ‘bout, haha. I don’t see much of a point in getting mad, ya know? Life is a big party-- you gotta take advantage of every moment before it’s gone, and you can‘t waste it getting‘ mad at people and holdin‘ grudges. Some don’t think like that, but hey! It’s their life, their choice. Me? I’m gonna live every moment to the fullest.
I’m an outgoing guy and pretty helpful, if I do say so myself. Always offering my hand to help a beautiful dame- er, uh, damsel in distress. Now, I know it won’t get me anywhere most of the time… but maybe my kindness will come back and bite me in the ass someday. And besides, if I ain’t busy, what’s the trouble in helping someone that needs it? I‘m dependable and trustworthy, even though I‘m probably startin‘ to sound like a broken record.
I‘m not sure if this is a good trait, but in my opinion, it is. I‘m quite sarcastic, even when it‘s uncalled for. That‘s probably the bad part. But I love sarcasm, personally. You need a little bit of humor in your day, and most of the time, sarcasm‘s my kind.
* what are some things that you can improve on?
The Thomas Abraham O’Malley? You think the O’Malley has flaws? I resent that statement, even though it’s true! First off, I’m a horrible cook. But I guess that’s kinda a minor detail, am I right? I guess that’s why the band and I live on take out food when we’re on the road… or hell, even when we’re at home.
I have a bad habit of saying what’s on my mind, even when it’s the wrong time to do so. I usually don’t care what people think, so I usually don’t bother to think about my opinions of something or someone before I say it. That doesn’t really come in handy when I’m tryin’ to impress some girls, but if they can’t handle my mouth, they probably can’t handle me.
I think another thing that’s bad about me is my ability to never take anything seriously. Like I said before, I’m a jokester. I live life to the fullest and I’m probably a little too laid back. I take everything as a joke; if something’s not a joke, I try to turn it into one. I can tell when people are being serious; I mean, I’m not an idiot, even though I may look like one. I just don’t see a point in acting so serious all the time. Once again, life is way too short. I’m a fun lovin’ guy, and I think everyone should have a good time. Try not to dwell on the serious stuff and move onto the good times, know what I mean?
Lastly, I love women. Probably too much. I mean, what man doesn’t love women, right? But I love them to a degree where it’s almost toxic. I really can’t help it! I got lots of lines up my sleeves, and I gotta put ‘em to use sometime, right? I can take no for an answer, but honestly, it’s surprising if I get it. But if a babe doesn’t want some of this… that’s fine with me. There’s someone out there that does.
* what's your biggest secret? we won't tell.
Well… I guess the first secret I have is that I secretly wanna be a family man. I love kids, ya know? That’s no secret to anyone-- I won’t even try to put on a tough act for my band when it comes to that stuff. But the band doesn’t really know that I wanna get married, and maybe have a few kids of my own. I hate to say it, but it’s kinda scary, even to the O‘Malley. If I met some chick and got married, it’d mean I’d have to trade in my little black book for a wedding ring. And as much as I love little tykes, I can’t imagine being a father. I could do some serious head damage to my kids-- that ain’t nothing’ to laugh about. And seeing the O’Malley with a straight face is a scary sight.
I guess my other secret is that I can’t swim. I hate it with a passion. I hate getting water in my eyes, and I hate going under. I feel like I’m gonna suffocate- like I’m in a close space under a microscope. It’s scary. I avoid going to pools and oceans at all costs.
* what does your heart want?
Aw, man, you’re gonna make me get all mushy, aren’t you? Well, I already mentioned some of the “things my heart wants.” I love kids, so I’d love to have them someday. But I guess fallin’ in love comes before that, doesn’t it? Heh heh. In a girl, I like her to be a little wholesome. That’s somethin’ I’m not used to, so it’d be a nice change. A girl that speaks properly and has nice ideals and manners. It might be too much to ask for, because most dames I meet these days don’t have the class of a dog. But looks-wise, I’d like her to be blonde, with sapphire eyes that dazzle… even though looks don’t matter much to me. UGH, I gotta stop this mushy stuff! It’s gettin’ to my head, ya know?
* what do you do in your spare time?
Well, my numero uno priority is my band. I’m their singer, so they do need me. But aside from that, we’ve always been together. Helpin’ one another when we’re all in a bar brawl, all that good stuff. So I guess takin’ care of my boys is one of the few things I’ve got goin’ for me at the moment.
Like I said, I travel. Whenever I can, I go on the road. Whether it’s with the band or without ‘em, I’ll last. As much as I love the boys, a guy needs his alone time. I’ve only been to one place overseas, and that’s France. Man, I love it there. The cities, the countryside, the wine, the women. It’s truly a fun town. Unfortunately, I ran my funds down a bit low while I was there, so I had to hitch my way home. And on a boat, that isn’t fun. But hey, I’m a survivor. I managed, and it was a great adventure. But I’m gettin’ off topic, ain’t I? The point is, I’m always on the go, and eager to see some new places. Staying in one place too long don’t sit right with me, but somehow, I always find myself ending up in Walten again. I guess this little dive is addicting.
* so what does your family life look like?
Well, my pop and I weren’t all that close. But I gotta thank him for gettin’ me into jazz. It’s how I make a living, after all. But the ole’ man couldn’t take it, because I couldn’t play trumpet like him. Now, don’t get me wrong-- I tried it out. O’Malley gives everything a shot just once. So I sat through my dad’s stupid jazz lessons while we practiced on the road-- I tried hard, I tell you what. I just never got the hang of it. I wasn’t musically inclined, at least, in that area. Unlike my father’s best friend’s son, Ben Crothers, who had taken a liking to the trumpet immediately. Now, get me, Ben was my best friend, but I gotta admit, I resented him for being so good at the trumpet. That made him my father’s favorite, even though they weren’t related. The O’Malley gets over things fast; if someone doesn’t like me, I smirk, shrug it off, and move on with my life. I know my pop loved me, but I just think it’s a stupid reason not to show it. Just ’cuz I didn’t do what he wanted, ya know? But whatever- he lived with the burden until he died a few years back. Now I’m living happily, and I don’t have to worry about impressing anyone.
My mom’s relationship with me is pretty straightforward. She comforted me when I was feelin’ blue- at least, she did when I was little. Now I’m a grown man. I don’t need to be comforted. I love her though, and I’ll take care of her until her last days on earth. She never cared whether I could play the trumpet or not-- she loved me because I was her Thomas. Ugh, you all got me mushy again. Thanks.
