Brendan Ferdinand Conlan
* tell us a little about yourself.I’m Bredan Conlan, and believe it or not, I’m twenty-seven till May 18th. I was born in Dublin, Ireland in the year 1983. Yeah, I’m an Irish guy with a southern accent, laugh all you want; it’s pretty damn hilarious. My family moved here to the states when I was three and I haven’t looked back, the emerald Isle sounds nice, but from what I’ve seen, the people aren’t that great. My father started a stable before he headed out, the only thing he left to with his and two kids other than a pile of debts, and I took over after sewing my bastard mother for the deeds. I managed to pull it up out of the dirt and make it one of the most profitable farms around. I give horseback riding lessons, allow rentals if I trust the people, and show my kids in events.
* what are some of your positive traits? Now I’m not one to brag, but I will say this, I’m great with horses. We just seem to get along, my stallion Jacob being my favorite though. I know every style of riding there Is, but prefer to ride bare back ‘cause it’s easier on the horse and is far less painful on jr. I care a lot about my horses, more often than not treating them like my own children, that is, that’s how I would treat my children if I had any. To be honest, all animals seem to like me, and I them. Though I am not a vegetarian, I appreciate the sacrifice that they make to provide me with sustenance and strength to keep on living. I’m definitely an animal person if there ever was one.
I’m easy going, things don’t get to me. There are troubles in life that have to be dealt with, then there are the senseless worries that most of the world’s population harbor that I simply don’t see the point of. As far as I’m concerned, affairs of the heart are all that truly matter. That’s one of the reasons I rule a ranch, I love my horses and therefore love my job. I don’t see why people go into professions that they hate just for the money when, if you have the business savvy, you can work in an area that draws on your natural talents and love. Before you ask, yes I believe in true love, and yes love at first sight it also a possibility, though I have never experienced it myself.
To say I am chivalrous would be a bit of an understatement. I believe that all women are beautiful, each one as radiant as a flower and whose personality should be treasured and adored. Women are magnificent creations, their very existence a gift from God, their smiles as glorious as the rising sun. As such, they deserve a certain respect from males that is not often shown in modern society. For example, a man show always hold the door for a lady, be it a car door, the door to a class room, or to a movie theater, it is impolite for men not to do so seeing and more often than not we are stronger and it’s just nice. I am often told that it makes a lady feel good when such things are used in everyday practice. It’s not that they cannot open the door themselves, for I am a full believer in equality, it’s just a sign of admiration to do so.
In all honesty, I’m quite the persistent man; I don’t give up without a fight. I know that there are something’s that I cannot change, and accept those things as they are; however, there are things of which I am completely capable of changing if I just keep on trying. Most who fail, fail because they don’t realize how close to success they actually are. Becoming disheartened is a condition of which I have never suffered from; I know that most things are within my grasp if I just try hard enough. Sometimes it just takes a couple jumps to gain enough momentum to achieve the stars.
* what are some things that you can improve on?I admit, I can be a bit over protective at times. After what happened to my sister while i was away, I find it hard to leave the state, let alone the country, without making sure that she would be alright. There are a select few people that I trust to look after her, and even though she a grown woman of twenty six, that is fully capable of taking care of her self, there is a part of me that wishes that I could be with her at all times. if anyone was to hurt her, or try to, i would not hesitate to kill them. End of story. in addition, I take care of all those that work for me or that I know. if one of my stable hand is in trouble, they all know that they can come to me and I'll sort it out, that's just the kind of guy that I am. Mess with any of my family including friends) and your body will never be found, it's as simple as that.
I'm something of a blind believer, I trust extraordinarily easily. if my sister said that someone attacked her, I wouldn't hesitate to make them suffer, no matter the evidence to the contrary. If someone says they are going to help me, I take them at their word, which has left me high and dry quite a few times, though it hasn't made me any more scrupulous. I just can't seem to see through lies, maybe because I don't want to admit to myself that someone would actually lie, or because I'm just not that cunning, either way, I'm not the kind of guy that would play Texas hold 'em, cause I would lose miserably.
Okay, so I'm not exactly the brightest bulb in the box. I'm no genius, i was a B-C student and not one for math, however, I'm not a dolt. I'm perfectly capable of reading and understanding, I'm just not brilliant. In the modern age, I'm something of a dinosaur, I have a non-touchscreen cell phone, and a windows XP computer. The technology of these days kind of is a bit over my head. It's a good thing that I don't have to have to know how to use Excel in order to run a Ranch, other wise I'd be completely screwed.
* what's your biggest secret? we won't tell.I’m in love with the girl who works at the pastry shop; I’ve taken to going there every morning to get sweets for breakfast just to see her. I’ve asked her to lunch each sunup, but she has always refused, maybe tomorrow she will say yes.
* what does your heart want?So I’m completely straight, not against gays, I’m just not one. I have a thing for women with black hair and bright smiles. I can’t seem to be able to resist the scent of apples nor those ruby red lips of Sophie White. Sparkling blue eyes, long legs and smooth, "touch me" skin have always been some of my biggest weaknesses. However, blondes do absolutely nothing for me, and for some reason, the obsession with tanning that has swept the nation as of late hasn't improved the looks of any female in my opinion.
* what do you do in your spare time?In the end, I have only one hobby, and that just so happens to be what i do for a living as well. I'm a rancher, I train, raise, ride, breed, and show horses. I do it because I love horses, because there is a special relationship between a horse and its rider that can't be explained in words nor in picture, it's a beautiful thing.
* so what does your family life look like?My father skipped town seven years after we moved to the states, when I was nine and my younger sister was eight. Though he did leave us with the ranch, my mother never really got over it. I don't blame her for what she became, she loved that man with all her heart and soul, but it doesn't change the fact that after my dad left, she was never the same. While she was busy running the ranch I was taking care of the needs of my younger sister Kaylyn. My mother became emotionally non existent and worked the seven year old so hard that I decided that it would be best if I took over her share so that she could have some hint of a child hood. it wasn't fair that just because our father was a coward, that the girl couldn't enjoy the little happiness's that came with being young.
By the age of sixteen I had become an accomplished rider and showman, my mother treating me like a prince for the money and press that I brought to the ranch, but as my little sister didn't have all that much talent, she was worthless in our mothers eyes. It broke Kaylyn's heart that no matter what she did, she couldn't get receive the same look from the cold heart as I, and it made me so angry that she was treated with such disdain. Kaylyn could sing like an angel, but that didn't do much for our mother. She was always being spoken down to, as if she wasn't worth anything, being constantly compared to me and insulted for her lack of equine skill. I stood up for her when I could, but I couldn't do much when I was away at shows. I took to taking her with me to protect her, a diction that I will forever be thankful for.
However I couldn't take her everywhere. On one such occasion, I had a show in California, and didn't have enough money to pay for a second ticket, seeing as my mother refused to pay for it, so I reluctantly left Kaylyn there saying that if she needed anything, just to call me. Well I thank God everyday that I kept my phone charged, 'cause on the second to last day i got a call from the hospital, Kaylyn had "ran into a door" with such force that it broke her nose and dislocated her shoulder. That was the last straw, I was eighteen, a legal adult and as such it was my responsibility to stop the women from harming my baby sister again. it had never happened before to my knowledge and it was never going to happen again. After a last minute red eye back to NC, I visited Kaylyn at the hospital and promised her that mother was never going to come near her again. I called the police, got the poor excuse for a female put in jail for child abuse and took custody of my seventeen year old sister. I managed to convince the judge that I could handle the Ranch and that it was best that the assets were transferred to me so that she wouldn't have any excuse to break the restraining order after she got out of jail. Since that day, my sister and I have ran the Conlan Ranch with our own hands, and the hands of many stable boys, to make it grow into one of the most profitable in all the state.
* what are the memorable moments in your life?
I will never forget the first time I rode a horse. I was about six years old, this was back when I father was around, and scared to death. Now that I look back, the horse was only about twelve hands, but seemed like a monster from where I was standing. My father lifted me up upon the young geldings back and hopped on behind me. From that moment on, i knew that that was what I wanted to do with my life.
Though I'm not happy that I had to do it, when i got the Ranch from the courts, I secured the freedom and health of my little sister and our financial stability for the rest of our lives. It was a hard decision, but one that had to be made for the betterment of our lives and I sure as hell wasn't going to let that creature back into our lives after what she did, never. Ever since then the old ranch turned from just a business to a dream come true.
It was a cold winters morning, i was on my way into town to take care of some things pertaining to the Ranch, and I spotted this bakery. i was starving, I had skipped breakfast earlier and my stomach was growling louder than an old Chevy engine. Figuring that it couldn't hurt, I turned my charcoal silverado around and pulled into the parking lot. i wasn't expecting to be greeted by such an angel, but as I opened the door, I looked p to see a woman that was so beautiful that I thought that I was in a dream. turns out her name was Sophie White, and ever since then i have asked her to lunch every day, and have eaten so many pastries that it would out the cookie monster to shame.
